In the kitchen with Mr. Macabre...CHOCOLATE BACON!!! (with apologies to The Spooky Vegan)

Somebody hold me and bring me a cigarette, I'm in the midst of an afterglow after eating this...

Last week I was listening to NPR and I caught the tail end of something about carnival food.  I've had a fried Twinkie (meh, it wasn't all it was cracked up to be), fried Oreos (tasted like a wonderfully moist brownie), funnel cakes, twister fries, Polish dogs, I love 'em all.  Then they mentioned something that made the hair stand up on the back of my neck in curiosity and excitement...

Chocolate coated bacon.

I haven't been able to get it off my mind until this evening and I will share with you the preparation for the ecstasy of this (children, shut your ears) orgasmic treat:

Ingredients--
Bacon
Chocolate (a chocolate bar will do nicely)
Fry your bacon in your usual fashion (I use a microwave to catch the grease, although a restaurant nearby me deep fries their bacon)
Save the drippings for a bacon smoothie for these hot days!!!  Yum!
Melt the chocolate either in a double boiler or in the microwave.
Spread the melted chocolate over the bacon and let cool...my eyes rolled back several times involuntarily while eating a couple of pieces.  Somewhere, my physician has got a cold chill and he doesn't know why...

Hahaha no worries, my boyfriend has done worse!

Maybe I can try a vegan version with Smart Bacon (the vegan version of bacon).

:)

I've heard of this before, but always thought it was just people talking to talk. I must now try it!

Oh my goodness...my stomach feels queasy at the mere words, let alone the visual. It's hard for me to understand why this repulses me so, considering that I love me some bacon, and chocolate is my all time favorite food. But the two of these together just makes me want to hurl and I don't know why...ha! No offense AT ALL to you Mr. M. You totally rock for being able to consume something so completely carnal.

It reminds of something I tried one time after finding the recipe in a "Sweet Potato Queens" Book. It was bacon smothered in brown sugar I think, and then broiled in the oven. They made it sound like the most yummy Southern delicacy below the Mason Dixon line, but when I tried it literally made me nauseous. And your concoction just ups the ante ten fold.

But I must confess that none of the fair food you listed, could I digest either, so maybe I'm just not giving it a fair shake. But then again, I also think putting salt on sweet fruit like watermelon is blasphemous and that's a big thing to do in the South.

Hmmm...suddenly I'm feeling ashamed that perhaps I'm a pathetic example of a true southern belle if I cannot eat these otherwise decadent concoctions. I need go read my GRITS book and repent I guess! :o)

Hmmm . . . intriguing. But I'm with Wendy on this one. Although bacon and chocolate are two of my favourite foods, I prefer to keep my sugar and salt separate. Glad you enjoyed it though. :)

Don't feel bad Wendy, I (holds his head down in shame) can't STAND watermelon which puts me in precarious standing as a Southern gent.

I used to combine weird combinations of food to see what they tasted like...the two worst were caramel ice cream sauce on spaghetti (THAT was gross) and salsa on an apple (it actually tasted like throw up). I'm a freak, I know.

I've tried to make Bacon in Brown Sugar...it was ok, nothing special at all like I was hoping/expecting. I personally like drenching my bacon in maple syrup when I eat pancakes though.

Why ruin perfectly good chocolate? :D

Being vegetarian I have to agree with Spooky Vegan...maybe veggie bacon? Maybe...but I doubt it.

Did I hear "deep fried bacon"? Wow, that is like the deep fried butter, very scary! In that not good way.

Thanks for sharing...I think :)

Cheers!

MMMMM. Salt and sweet go great together. I feel fat just looking at that.......well, ok, fatter.

Okay...you are a freak of nature my friend! I laughed that you said the salsa apple tasted like throw up. I am a big chicken when comes to eating anything that sounds even remotely gross. But YOU...well you could totally win on Survivor or Fear Factor. Apparently you have an iron gut. And I can't believe you hate Watermelon. It is my favorite fruit. I have been known to pretty much just live off of one watermelon over a weeks time, consuming the entire thing myself for breakfast, lunch and dinner...ha! Well keep on with the concoctions because you never know when you'll find the next big thing to make it big in the food biz! :o)

PS...you are probably even brave and crazy enough to eat Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. Those things are vile with flavors of vomit, earwax, skunk spray and sardine!

I do love both...not sure what I think about them together... it's like the bacon flavored vodka thing... love vodka, love bacon...but not sure I wanna drink it! :p perhaps one day...

I'm with Wendy and Halloween Spirit on this one. I love bacon and chocolate but I don't feel confident with the combination of the two. On the other hand, bacon and maple syrup are totally going together. I have maple syrup producer in my family and it is part of the family tradition to eat bacon coated in maple syrup.

@Wendy--I found out there's a new frat boy initiation ritual now (no kidding). They buy up boxes of Bernie Botts and pick out the vomit ones and make the pledge/victim eat a handful of them and wash it down with beer.
Naaaaaaaaaaaassssssttttttttyyyyyyy!!!

Ahh yes, I've had many boxes of them (told you I was a freak). The one I couldn't stand was sardine, that was gross but dirt was actually quite interesting.

@Frog Queen--deep fried butter, what's the problem?

Haha, I have a strange compulsion to try this now.
Those Every Flavour Beans are quite addicting actually, accept for boogie, sardine, vomit, spaghetti sauce...the soap and grass are my favourites, actually. Dirt was nice too ;)
