Then there are people like me... Hallowe'en isn't simply an evening on October 31st, it's a hobby, a passion and an obsession.Mr. Macabrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885918409138932986noreply@blogger.comBlogger565125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8137640325296397706.post-79751452053070422292019-12-11T08:19:00.001-06:002019-12-11T08:19:22.183-06:00Perhaps the most wonderful thing on the interwebs!!!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This brings Christmas cheer to my heart! It's like a Hallmark channel Christmas movie with Valerie<br />
Bertinelli! It's like watching a choir of children sing carols on your front lawn! It's a hot cup of video cocoa with marshmallows AND whipped cream! <br />
<br />
My faith in Christmas is restored!Mr. Macabrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885918409138932986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8137640325296397706.post-10882739727778911432019-10-29T11:57:00.002-05:002019-10-29T11:57:46.156-05:00Standard and Required Reading For EveryoneFascinating read, some information that I didn't know and some inspiration from one woman who helped changed the course of our beloved holiday.......<br />

<span style="background-color: white;">Ok, I'm strong, I can do this without cussing. Probably not. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Trunk or treat is a fairly new concept in which people go to a parking lot either in a church or a shopping center and open the trunks to their cars, decorate them, usually cute or (shudder) educational, and provide a safe, well-lit area for children to come, heavily supervised, to get candy.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Whew, I did it, I really got through an explanation of THAT DAMN ABOMINATION THAT IS AS STUPID AS IT IS LAME!!! </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Looks like I didn't get through it after all but I don't care! I despise the concept and the underlying watering down of Hallowe'en, I have seen one where everyone's cars were lined up and each trunk was an educational thing on different countries. You learned about the country and got a treat that was representative of the country. GOOD LORD PEOPLE, THESE KIDS GO TO DAMN SCHOOL ALL THE TIME, AT LEAST LET THEM HAVE A LITTLE INANE FUN FOR A DAMN CHANGE!!! I would have had Australia and given the little nippers Vegemite and told them, "Now, you learn from this, trick or treating means sugar and chocolate, trick or damn trunking or whatever the hell this is, means learning more crap and getting lousy crap to eat. Now go be a little bastard until your mom and dad lets you go to a couple of doors and get something to rot out your teeth and don't let me catch you near a car trunk again. Happy damn Hallowe'en kid".</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Do I make myself crystal clear? I don't like Trunk or Treat.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">The other thing is Fall Festivals, Harvest Festivals, Family Festivals, and the like. I grew up going to a Hallowe'en Carnival at my elementary school. You could tell when it was October 1, advertisement signs were hung in the lunchroom from strings like garland. We got to wear our Hallowe'en costumes on Hallowe'en and I believe the Friday night before we had the Hallowe'en carnival. Every classroom had an event and you bought tickets to each event. You could go fishing in which you cast your line over a movable blackboard with cutout fish adorning the front and when your line gave a tug, you reeled in a toy! Or you could visit the witches' house and feel a bowlful of worms (cold spaghetti), dead men's eyes (peeled grapes) or bowl of blood (ketchup). Maybe you had the hankering to find out what the future held by visiting the fortune teller (who looked suspiciously like one of the fourth grade teachers) or walk through the haunted house (ignoring the Patch the Pony posters and desks lined up to make a path through horrors of volunteers jumping out with rubber masks in the blacklight). I fail to see where I am, or anyone else that went to our school has been mentally scarred or turned out to be a Satanic priest because of Hallowe'en carnivals.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Then came the 80's where suddenly Hallowe'en was suddenly the devil's birthday and the grand and glorious crusade of imposed righteousness stripped us of Scream in the Dark put on by Campus Life Ministries, Savage House Haunted Hayride hosted by Methodist Youth and a host of other VERY good quality haunted houses. Lies permeated about Hallowe'en and the deep evil that it imposed on our children that we must protect. And I bought into it, for about 1 year and I was miserable that year. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Never, ever, ever again.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white;">Long Live Hallowe'en! </span></div>

<br /></div>
<div>
This project is one of the many that I have put off for YEARS, which is unfortunate not only because I'm an expert procrastinator but also for the fact they came out great.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
First of all, you need some tin reflectors off of the eBays. They look like this...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7tEe34LQ9nfUt95e1BMBrkNQIUEzuqh1LYRqp8bDyjFVtTXqUOr0bt_w4Sb-_UtgmCssEgjVmKDXAsMEpMpTYG7hWQuLiRRknXUXzjVtfiFCbZ3DHokzvBqPZPaMJYOHezdkzK5vWl5JU/s1600/DABEBD04-9E30-4428-A0B9-1B45DC57F581.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7tEe34LQ9nfUt95e1BMBrkNQIUEzuqh1LYRqp8bDyjFVtTXqUOr0bt_w4Sb-_UtgmCssEgjVmKDXAsMEpMpTYG7hWQuLiRRknXUXzjVtfiFCbZ3DHokzvBqPZPaMJYOHezdkzK5vWl5JU/s320/DABEBD04-9E30-4428-A0B9-1B45DC57F581.heic" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUmyRiiBAJ5jp7jfS0QrHkKlEEZqs5L6JiWyTICImTLfFpvEG94PyvbAu7XGpno95wsOAqxnRYfnZ2IgxoCmpucnX4XDwKEkcFajqPsYt2IXCPEsRQvUIEPZwXX_vZzQFIwtglybud2CmM/s1600/06344F8E-5E7E-4C05-8050-C4E588A48F8F.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUmyRiiBAJ5jp7jfS0QrHkKlEEZqs5L6JiWyTICImTLfFpvEG94PyvbAu7XGpno95wsOAqxnRYfnZ2IgxoCmpucnX4XDwKEkcFajqPsYt2IXCPEsRQvUIEPZwXX_vZzQFIwtglybud2CmM/s320/06344F8E-5E7E-4C05-8050-C4E588A48F8F.heic" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They come in all sorts of different sizes and types and it doesn't matter if they are rusty or not, you're going to be painting them. The good thing is that they were not that expensive when I got mine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, you need a base coat of spray paint, to match whatever color glitter you want. If you want black glitter, you need gloss black paint (although, you do realize that black doesn't reflect light). I used orange but I tried silver too (didn't work too well).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Paint the reflectors with the gloss spray paint, both sides. I paint the backs, let them dry and then paint the "good side". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Be patient and let the paint cure for however long it takes (usually 24-48 hours).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSW9yx_hypJJqJrtLClt2KtjHd_CIUqOD4y7wfV9v-lX6zkQuheOFcB-OE_MhZY5sP73vhpc6shodmmpjZeh1EeqzoVOQBz2N1IRdEoPT9vN7U6RCJ_KgAjenoD4573fGnxT0VBLIvMlfH/s1600/9D95372D-14B2-493C-A561-39C3ECE50C68.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSW9yx_hypJJqJrtLClt2KtjHd_CIUqOD4y7wfV9v-lX6zkQuheOFcB-OE_MhZY5sP73vhpc6shodmmpjZeh1EeqzoVOQBz2N1IRdEoPT9vN7U6RCJ_KgAjenoD4573fGnxT0VBLIvMlfH/s320/9D95372D-14B2-493C-A561-39C3ECE50C68.heic" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next comes the fun part...spray them with glitter!!! I have tried the Krylon and the Rust-Oleum brands and I have to say that I like the Rust-Oleum better personally. However, I have had some trouble with spraying the product out; the can has a tendency to clog. I have had luck with short bursts of spraying instead of one long spray and immediately turning the can upside down and spraying a bit to clear the nozzle. The glitter is orange, the carrier spray is clear so that is why we painted the reflectors orange. You may have trouble finding this color, I did and had to order it on the ebays or Amazon, I forget which (note-I have noticed that a LOT of my eBay purchases are being shipped via Amazon so check the price before you order something, just a heads up).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, spray a coat of clear sealant on the reflectors. Not only will this protect them from flaking and dulling, they will look all the more shiny and shiny is a good thing!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i2.wp.com/paintedrocklife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/051.png?resize=302%2C757&ssl=1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="757" data-original-width="302" height="320" src="https://i2.wp.com/paintedrocklife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/051.png?resize=302%2C757&ssl=1" width="127" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is what I used, available from your local (hopefully family-owned) hardware store, worked wonderfully.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8wZZAdXGMcYwYh5Q8w-jY0kkpWRh2Bmrq3iwMOlQ7kYY9q9qOjlDrlRo2ckW84VDMyiP96JHoQj4b_1DcXEoT1qLgJNJxWbkcUSMkEPgaDqO-R8ExgsDCInIldzldwzgOb6eWIMeGjM5R/s1600/275C6D5B-27CB-42D9-A214-9B0BA8BA0DDC.heic" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8wZZAdXGMcYwYh5Q8w-jY0kkpWRh2Bmrq3iwMOlQ7kYY9q9qOjlDrlRo2ckW84VDMyiP96JHoQj4b_1DcXEoT1qLgJNJxWbkcUSMkEPgaDqO-R8ExgsDCInIldzldwzgOb6eWIMeGjM5R/s320/275C6D5B-27CB-42D9-A214-9B0BA8BA0DDC.heic" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, once they are all dried and pretty, you can put them on your C9 light strand! If you can use LED, more power (or less in this case) to you, I couldn't find any orange LED C9 light strands so I bought some orange C9 bulbs online and used them. I would much prefer LED not only for the energy savings sake but also for the heat, standard bulbs put off a lot of heat and can melt cords and other stuff if they are touching them. Most C9 cords have 25 bulbs to them BTW. So there you have it, don't put off this project like I did for 4 years (yes, it was 4 years), go ahead and make something pretty!</div>

I admit it. Sure I respect chain saws, demented killers with hockey masks and possessed clowns/babies but as for me, I stick with Hallowe'en being the one night of the year where the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Doesn't mean I get the whole alien autopsy thing for Hallowe'en but if that's your thing, go for it. I'm just an old fashioned witch, ghost, cemetery and haint sort of guy.<br />
<br />
Kind of disappointed in the current offerings of the season. Usually I lickity split it to Target but there is woefully slim offerings. Same goes for Walmart and the rest of the retailers I've been to. Even Spirit was low on thing that are unique and off the beaten track. I try to find stuff that is a bit gothic, Haunted Mansion stuff and if I'm lucky, that I can incorporate into my decor year round.<br />
<br />
I'm currently in a 1920's-1960's retro Hallowe'en mood. You can never go wrong with a tried and true Biestle skeleton or Denneson crepe paper witch. But those things are going for the big bucks on da eBays. Don't even think about getting a paper mache pumpkin under 100.00, it just ain't going to happen.<br />
<br />
Luckily, we are children (and adults) of the digital age and if you hunt a little, you can find some pretty groovy stuff.<br />
<br />
World Market has this fabulous <a href="https://www.worldmarket.com/product/vintage+pumpkin+container.do?sortby=ourPicks&from=fn" target="_blank">repro jack</a> that I had a fit over and at 19.99, it isn't too bad of a deal. Wouldn't put a candle in it but an electric tea light or drill a small hole in the back or bottom for a C9 bulb is easy.<br />
<br />
<br />

We just finalized the adoption this year but he has lived with us 2 years as a foster child so that means 2 Hallowe'ens together.<br />
<br />
You ever hear something so out of the ordinary from your normal consciousness that you have to process it? That happened to me when I found out my kid, who will now be known as Little Icky (for Ichabod Macabre)<u style="font-style: italic;"> had never been trick or treating</u>. His idea of it was just get in the car, go to the parking lot and get candy from people with their trunks open. <br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">NOT IN <i>THIS </i>HOUSE!</span></b><br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b>
With my work cut out, I quickly did a dia de los muertos makeup job and headed out with him into the night, teaching him to say "trick or treat" and "thank you", which houses you go to and which ones you pass up and to make sure to compliment any and all decorations. Overall, he made a pretty good haul and I took the customary 20% candy tax.<br />
<br />
Year 2<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">"I want to be Spiderman."</span><br />
<br />
I took a deep sigh and went through my head on places I could find accurate fabrics and accessories. Over the years, the fabric industry has narrowed and a lot of the companies have quit making good quality costuming fabrics or the prices have become astronomical but if it's out there, I could find it.<br />
<br />
"Dang it kid, you're only giving me 2 weeks for this and......."<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">"They have it at Spirit"</span><br />
<br />
..............long silence.<br />
<br />
"Beg pardon?"<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">"The one I want is at Spirit."</span><br />
<br />
The reality was slowly dawning upon me...rejection of my talents. <br />
<br />
"Kid, you do know that I am a costumer, an expert in sewing and and an accomplished tailor. I can make you anything in the world, ANYTHING."<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;">"This one has web shooters."</span><br />
<br />
"If you want to be Harry Potter, I'll charge your wand with real magic! How about <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> D</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">'Artagnan? I'll forge you a real sword! Please, how about Lucifer? Huge black wings? Dracula? Silk cape? Anything, this is Hallowe'en, the best night of the year! You have a master at your disposal! Let me make your costume one that people will talk about!"</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="color: red; font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">"They have a 20% discount coupon."</span></span><br />
<span style="color: red; font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></span>
<h1 class="start-double-quote dark-black light serif mt0 quote--long" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #1b1b1b; font-family: "Libre Baskerville", Baskerville, Georgia, serif; font-size: 1.5rem; font-weight: 300; line-height: 2.125rem; margin: 0px 0px 0.5em; word-break: break-word;">
"We are quicksilver, a fleeting shadow, a distant sound...our home has no boundaries beyond which we cannot pass. We live in music, in a flash of color...we live on the wind and in the sparkle of a star!</h1>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">And you want to trade it all for a half acre of crabgrass."</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">--Endora</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

I know how you feel, I so know how you feel.</div>

<br />Mr. Macabrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885918409138932986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8137640325296397706.post-62208819809841806022019-10-01T20:53:00.000-05:002019-10-01T20:53:29.987-05:00Dang, it's been 5 years.My how time flies when you're having fu.....<br />
<br />
It's been a lot of things but fun <i>definitely</i> hasn't been one of them. As you can see from my previous post, I have been recently fired and that was going to be the start of a new blog as my new life as a househusband.<br />
<br />
But you know, I can't stay away from Hallowe'en. It's my passion, my life and it actually gets my sorry rear out of bed a lot of days so I owe it to Hallowe'en and myself to keep this continuing. Is blogging a thing anymore? Is it all Tumblr and Instagram and Facebook now? I have no idea. I hope that there are some of you still out there.<br />
<br />
During my length of absence, I had (failed) back surgery (4 screws and 3 rods plus a synthetic disk), we adopted a kid (a boy who just had his 12th birthday), was a manager of a health food restaurant, and got fired from a company out of retaliation for reporting harassment, and a couple of other things. Probably something else in there I did but that's the highlights. I haven't decorated much at all since 2011; I couldn't lift more than 10 pounds without excruciating pain so I let it all slide. And while it slid, I slid with it. It actually felt like a piece of my soul was gone, and yeah, I know that sounds hokey but it is true. Hallowe'en was and is a part of me.<br />
<br />
<h2>
Old, Gay and Gray</h2>
<div>
When you look into the mirror and the person on the other side looks like a FaceApp pic, you know you're in deep poo poo. I have to tell people that mentally, I am about 22, physically, it feels like 104 1/2. After I was fired, I was pretty (very) depressed, I felt like a failure so I did what any rational, logical person would do...I pulled out my Tarot deck.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqrPkEhpsNyS-FIJHV7yRrBkHartiOlS79fUUB_9OanKkvqPwPWK_ScOQkGnLovQ5ku7h3DQF5FQlby1rHBGibJNqMdPNz8RO-L7Da6uebJWJPpc0V9NYvy2wQV-Gm-y-hJ5iBdAUx29Eh/s1600/download.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="228" data-original-width="228" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqrPkEhpsNyS-FIJHV7yRrBkHartiOlS79fUUB_9OanKkvqPwPWK_ScOQkGnLovQ5ku7h3DQF5FQlby1rHBGibJNqMdPNz8RO-L7Da6uebJWJPpc0V9NYvy2wQV-Gm-y-hJ5iBdAUx29Eh/s320/download.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Never really gave much credence in Tarot until I had a reading from a voodoo priestess in New Orleans and except for one or two small things, she nailed it. I have always been somewhat (very) interested in the occult, I have seen and experienced a LOT of weird stuff that can only be defined as paranormal. Whether the Tarot is paranormal or a good way to gain insight in yourself by what you read into in a draw of some cards, I don't know but it works for me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was my very first spread and it said this: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Inverted XIII swords: I have been limiting myself in my creativity and not cutting myself enough slack</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Upright queen of swords: I need to get my butt in gear and focus. There is someone nearby that is going to be helping you on a new endeavor and you need to remain clear and focused. (This one is eerily correct)\</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Upright VII Pentacles: In the long term, there will be fruit to the labors what I am doing. Just persevere and everything will work out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Daaaaaaaang, right on the money. I suddenly felt better. I had hope again. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was by myself one night last week and I decided to ask a pointed question: Where am I right now? I shuffled the deck 3 times and cut them and drew the card....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.trustedtarot.com/img/cards/the-fool.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="550" data-original-width="323" height="320" src="https://www.trustedtarot.com/img/cards/the-fool.png" width="187" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Fool.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To those unfamiliar with the Tarot, this is a very important card, the first in the deck. This one said to me that I'm starting over, I'm on a new adventure and basically today is the first day of the rest of your new life. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll take that any day....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
Mr. Macabrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885918409138932986noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8137640325296397706.post-77434850110705064212019-09-29T20:10:00.003-05:002019-10-01T20:55:17.852-05:00Can you come to HR please?I got up from my office desk and made my way down the hall. Probably something to do with my insurance or something. When I got there, it was the HR director, her assistant, my bitch of a supervisor and the head of sales. Blood pressure went up, felt the blood in my face go down.<br />
<br />
Spoiler alert....I was, for the first time in my life, being fired.<br />
<br />
"For performance reasons and others, we have decided that we should part ways. We would like you to quietly get your things and leave the building. You will be paid for your remaining PTO and for the rest of today."<br />
<br />
The rest was bla bla bla like an adult speaking in a Charlie Brown cartoon in my ears, the shock was setting in, about how my insurance was immediately cancelled except for my dental which ran to the end of the month, how HR would acknowledge my employment for the company but any recommendations would have to come from my supervisors (yeah, like I was going to ask them for any of that), and did I have any questions...<br />
<br />
"I have questions, like how do you justify someone who was trying his best with no training is getting fired that has been nothing less than exemplary in his job? Could it be that the ass department head that doesn't have the balls to be here whose butt got into trouble for harassing me is putting his minion bitch up to this? It may be cliche' but take this job and shove it bitch!"<br />
<br />
Yeah, should have said that, but instead I thanked them for the opportunity to work for the company and quietly left, gathered my things, said my goodbyes quietly and left.<br />
<br />
I sat in my car for a few minutes while the air conditioner cranked up. Texted my best friend and called my husband.<br />
<br />
I was fired.<br />

So, in my old school Hallowe'en pursuits, I come across really neat vintage paper products from Dennison, Beistle and others. I love these, they bring me back to Hallowe'ens past where everything was much simpler and fun. Or at least that's the way I romanticize them in my mind. However, I wanted to keep and display these pieces of art (and yes, they are indeed art) all year round and so behold!</div>

I had my vintage small glow skeleton done by a frame shop. They did a good job but they did charge me a whopping price (I think they boasted that it was done at 50% off and the price was around 55.00 if I remember right).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw1z5bo-ufz-CO_oMoOXBdL7zD1OcyXzvH9u5TlbzjxFpvak9aqBlOdfv1btgXI9FAKGSKUhRQjDGNWoQ2SZHfG5PTK76zz8dr2qpqUs2dFQ5Xy6g685UKcJWMN8A16sqrGclQoBLtYi-8/s1600/IMG_4161.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw1z5bo-ufz-CO_oMoOXBdL7zD1OcyXzvH9u5TlbzjxFpvak9aqBlOdfv1btgXI9FAKGSKUhRQjDGNWoQ2SZHfG5PTK76zz8dr2qpqUs2dFQ5Xy6g685UKcJWMN8A16sqrGclQoBLtYi-8/s1600/IMG_4161.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
This one was done under 20.00 by me. Went to Hobby Lobby and bought a frame set for half price, a half sheet of mat board and some acid-free mounting tabs and voila! instant Hallowe'en high art work for a lot less and I leave it up year round!Mr. Macabrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885918409138932986noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8137640325296397706.post-32613582443188428742014-10-02T20:16:00.002-05:002014-10-02T20:16:40.611-05:00Beauty and bane of my existence...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Had to drive down in the country today and I happened upon fields and fields of beautiful goldenrod, otherwise known as ragweed. I love these fields of fluffy yellow flowers along with black eyed Susans. </div>

The neat thing about these and daffodils is that in an abandoned field, you can see these flowers pop up marking where someone's long abandoned and gone homestead was located in one point in history.<br />

I love them, I think that they're beautiful and have envisioned a bed of wonderful little papery lanterns adorning my garden. I read an article about a little girl who would catch lightning bugs and put them in the lanterns to see them glow like ornaments in the summer night.<br />
Fat chance, can't even get them to grow decently much less bloom.<br />
So not to be daunted, I saw some LED branches at Big Lots a while back and with a little gumption, some leftover moss and a pot and a wall wart, I made this...I turn it on when I want to feel Hallowe'eny.<br />

<br />
<br />
I bought a little metal tree from an import store a while back and although I liked it, I didn't know what to do with it. I have always loved the little skulls that are synonymous with the Mexican Day of the Dead and then it kind of hit me when I saw the article what to do with my little tree besides slash my shin on it when I leave it in the floor. If you don't have a deadly metal tree full of rust and tetanus hanging around, you could use some branches and hang them from that which would look quite nice I would think. Not only are these really cool as little ornaments, they would be great as jewelry for Day of the Dead or Hallowe'en. A couple of findings and you could have little skull earrings or a bracelet or necklace. I wish I could take credit for this but I have to thank Martha Stewart for the bead tutorial in her October issue (not much else though, I was a bit disappointed in this year's Hallowe'en issue). Although I couldn't find a link to a tutorial, I'll show you how I did it...<br />

Rather than whine about how life gets in the way, I'll start by saying I've missed y'all! I'm going full throttle on this year's Hallowe'en and the first thing I'll share with you today is the construction of a vintage-type paper lantern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to my favorite holiday. It's ok if you like blood and guts and UFO's and stuff for Hallowe'en, it just isn't my cup of tea. A few years ago I fell in love with vintage Hallowe'en items (with the exception of vegetable people, I don't understand that concept at all), particularly items made by Beistle, Dennison and others. Luckily, <a href="http://www.vintagebeistle.com/" target="_blank">Beistle is making reproductions of vintage Hallowe'en paper items and the quality is great.</a> This is the base for this lantern project from their<a href="http://www.vintagebeistle.com/store/p/54-Halloween-Silhouette-Tabletop-Standup.aspx" target="_blank"> Hallowe'en Silhouette Tabletop Standup</a>, taken from original lantern designs from the 1920's. Instead of a standup, we are going to make a lantern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a materials list:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>a <a href="http://www.vintagebeistle.com/store/p/54-Halloween-Silhouette-Tabletop-Standup.aspx" target="_blank">Beistle Hallowe'en Silhouette Tabletop Standu</a>p</li>
<li>an X-Acto knife with a couple of blades</li>
<li>Vellum of your choice of color (I chose orange, of course. In case you might not know what vellum is, it is a paper substance that is semi-opaque, frosted looking if you will, and comes in many colors. Stationery stores sometimes have it, as well as some larger arts and crafts stores. I had to order mine online and fortunately it wasn't too expensive at all). It's fun and beautiful for a lot of crafts.</li>
<li>Stick glue (I used heavy duty because it was what was hanging around the house)</li>
<li>black spray paint</li>
<li>black heavy mat board (small piece)</li>
</ul>
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Okie Dokie, the first thing you will need to do is to determine the back and front (give you a hint, the glossy side is the front). With the front upward, CAREFULLY cut out all of the orange. The front and the back will not exactly match but don't worry, it's no deal at all. Take your time, your hand will get cramped and you'll have to put it down and come back to it. This is the hard part. When you have it all done, it looks something like this....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQSrLu3wsxpLZ0cXd9SFCLy7t-9lgtc_bdroRxJ8W3eI995oHeFzidfwxWOxQzUy9YZmAbF_0Z5iDGjWRL8ateWiO98VLs41x8NmEktzhUbgxMTpLJhmOUZVcBsgqPEa4PI_C8mY_2DLgE/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQSrLu3wsxpLZ0cXd9SFCLy7t-9lgtc_bdroRxJ8W3eI995oHeFzidfwxWOxQzUy9YZmAbF_0Z5iDGjWRL8ateWiO98VLs41x8NmEktzhUbgxMTpLJhmOUZVcBsgqPEa4PI_C8mY_2DLgE/s1600/010.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
You will notice that there are white edges along all your cut marks. This is where the black paint comes in...paint the paper with several very thin coats on both sides. I suspended mine with a piece of wire and gently misted it with several coats of paint. This removes all white edges and makes it look very professional.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is optional....if you want a flat base, score the bottom <i>very lightly</i> on the RIGHT side with your knife, you don't want to go through! If you don't want a base for it, skip down to the picture after the one with the cans. Why wouldn't you want a flat base? You might like the design, you might like to simply place the lantern over a light, you might be fed up of my over explaining things ad nauseum...</div>

NOW THE REAL HARD PART...cut a triangle out of the heavy mat board to go on the bottom. I can't help you with this, math and I are mortal enemies and I had to do this by trial and error. Yes, I know it is simple but you see, I hate math, math hates me and we like it that way. Note the lantern standing by itself in the back. I did mine by measuring the sides and marking them on a strip of paper and then folding the paper into a triangle and transferring that onto the mat board. It worked but I went the scenic route....And a tip...the triangle is NOT equilateral!!! The middle section (the cat) is slightly larger than the witch and devil. <br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b>NOW, LEAVE IT BE TO DRY!</b></span></div>

Guess what? You're done! You now have a beautiful reproduction vintage Hallowe'en lantern! And I'm supposed to tell you to NEVER to put a lighted candle in this, to ALWAYS use an electric tea light. I'm also supposed to tell you to always use eye protection (which I actually do, if you count my glasses) and a host of other stuff to keep you safe. Use the common sense that you were given when you do any project so you will make it to yet another Hallowe'en!<br />

I wanted to start making some heads for some new characters but ran out of Crayola's Model Magic, my medium of choice. I can't use papier mache, the stuff hates my guts for some reason and no matter what I do, it doesn't work. Period. The stuff takes one look at me and never never ever ever never never ever never dries or does right. I could place it on the corona of the sun and 2 weeks later it still will be damp and mooshy. Stick it right in the middle of the 9th layer of Dante's hell and it still will need another day to dry...FOR ETERNITY! But, being that it was 235 degrees below zero last night, I decided to not run to mecca (Hobby Lobby) and get some Model Magic. BUT, I had the ingredients that some pinner said made homemade Model Magic. Without getting into the preparation,<a href="http://www.southernasbiscuits.com/2011/11/homemade-model-magic.html?showComment=1323746182037" target="_blank"> here is the link to the article.</a><br />
<br />
First of all, the ingredients are cheap, water, corn starch and baking soda. and the preparation wasn't too hard at all. I did everything according to the directions and placed it in a ziplock overnight so it could cool.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzquUGvphpBuyrR-McjM4n4mp6JCPtMKJss533747cgtT5zsce6k985Ke_0tyhZwAGa_K18EvxLFcdPHbl_kvG23ywli7ecLj-dLvgxSLRcm10AMmAJ8aJwBeSNjY99SocG3BqQx5Zdd60/s1600/032.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzquUGvphpBuyrR-McjM4n4mp6JCPtMKJss533747cgtT5zsce6k985Ke_0tyhZwAGa_K18EvxLFcdPHbl_kvG23ywli7ecLj-dLvgxSLRcm10AMmAJ8aJwBeSNjY99SocG3BqQx5Zdd60/s1600/032.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
After letting it come to room temperature, I kneaded it a bit to make it smoother and introduced it to the fellow down below who was someone else but I decided that he needed a total facial reconstruction.<br />

And here is Rastus Bezeebus sitting on the sourdough bread starter on top of the hot water heater where he will be drying.<br />
<br />
As far as workability, I was very happy; the mixture smoothed out well, worked very easily and was softer than Model Magic. Downside so far, it has a kind of funky smell and the author of the article said a couple of drops of peppermint (I'm guessing that any essential oil would work nicely) counteracts the weird odor. If this stuff actually works out well, I will probably totally switch to this material. <br />
<br />
More to come when Rastus dries....Mr. Macabrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885918409138932986noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8137640325296397706.post-61379752090185985372014-02-14T20:37:00.002-06:002014-02-14T20:40:09.101-06:00Howdy All...<br />
Yes, I've been rather reclusive lately. I didn't do a haunt in 2012 or 2013 and it's starting to wear on my nerves. I NEED some haunting in my life so today I stepped back into the workshed, fired up the heaters so I wouldn't freeze and started to work...<br />
<br />
But before that, I think that I mentioned in my earlier post that I had some new parts put in last year. My dear Dr. Frankenstein saw that my spine had some problems and screwed some new parts into me...<br />

Did I mention that those screws are 3 1/2 inches long? Those little thin clippy things between the vertebrae are metal clips holding in the synthetic disk.<br />
One word...OUCH! It's been a long PAINFUL recovery and I'm still not 100% healed but it's getting there. I would definitely advise against it unless you absolutely must have it, but if you're a masochist, you'll be in heaven for many many months. <br />
But what you're looking for is Hallowe'en stuff and here's what I worked on today...<br />

I held my breath and plugged it in, it worked! Now all that is lacking is my favorite part of it, the decorating...and wheels! <br />

More to come. <br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
See, I haven't been totally useless. New for 2013 is the haunted baby buggy. The little critter (going to be an illuminated jack-o-lantern baby; I actually had a baby head sculpted and couldn't get past the whole deceased infant idea) will rise up and lay back down in the pram. I will say that the mechanism was a pain in the tush but it came out pretty nicely I think. <br />
